6:32 am
africa. pistorius has been emotional at most of the court hearings. what was his demeanor like today? >> exactly the same. in fact, day by day we expect the composure or results to set in. he's been sobbinging every day repeatedly. you would think you would be exhausted by now. he does appear exhausted at times. he walks in stony-faced, stares straight ahead. he doesn't look at anyone, not even his family. i made eye contact with him very briefly. he looked away immediately. i'm only sitting two feet away from him. it was unavoidable when i looked up. he doesn't show any emotion for the most part. sometimes he puts his head down, eyes closed. almost looks like he's sleeping but someone will say something. one of the attorneys will bring up details from that night and immediately he will start sobbing. he loses his composure quickly.
6:33 am
that happened repeatedly throughout the hearing. laura? >> do you know if he has much family in courtroom as well supporting him? >> every day his father is there. his brother, sister. other family members we don't know well. other supporters. every day he's had 8 to 10 people there supporting him. they show emotion, too. they cry when he cries. you will turn around and see the row of them teary-eyed together. other times they put their heads down together, appearing to be praying. they don't appear to have a lot of contact with oscar pistorius. they try to comfort him at times. in fact, yesterday when pistorius's statement was read by his lawyer and pistorius lost all composure, the judge stopped the proceeding and asked his brother to sit near him. pistorius said, no, no, i'm okay. he really wasn't. his brother put his arms around
6:34 am
him. pistorius has not shown any real affection or emotion in getting close to his family during these hearings. >> can you tell e us anything about about the talk of some sort of herbal remedy and seerngs found inside his home? >> that was interesting. the first thing we heard from police was they said in no uncertain circumstances they found steroids. it was characterized as testosterone with needles for injecting. that took the courtroom by surprise. it wasn't until they were done testifying that the defense got a chance to cross examine the police investigator and the defense said, hey, wasn't that an herbal remedy known as testofiberstudio eco-enzyme or something.
6:35 am
it had a complicated name. they hammered away and it turned out they didn't know. the investigator saw the first word of whatever it was, assumed it had something to do with testosterone. whatever the substance was they are testing it. but the defense denies that it was any kind of banned substance. >> all right. thank you very much. while the drama was playing out inside the courthouse we have new video in of protests going on outside the courthouse. women with's group across south africa are using the oscar pistorius case to call attention to the abuse of women around the world. the victim's friends speaking about what they should say should happen to the olympian. >> as women, are we supposed to sleep with guns under our pillows in case we mistake our loved ones and kill them?
6:36 am
how many tears must we shed before something is done? >> obviously i'm on her side. everybody deserves a chance. >> i don't think i want him to be out of the prison. to embrace our women and respect our women as women and children. >> pistorius will be back in court tomorrow. >> all right. 6:38 now. still ahead, a gaping hole in the ground where a restaurant once stood. we'll show you the after math of a fiery explosion and a search for clues going on now as investigators work to sift through rubble.
6:37 am
6:38 am
6:39 am
we are following a developing story from kansas city where firefighters are using cadaver dogs to search for any victims after a restaurant burst into flames yesterday evening. right now an employee is still missinging and more than a dozen hurt. you see how big the fire was. it was triggered by a natural gas explosion near an up scale shopping area not far from downtown kansas city. >> right now a bizarre and disturbing story out of southern california. a dead body found wedged into a water a tank on b a roof of a downtown l.a. hotel identified
6:40 am

6:44 am
that's where the water was gushing out. you can see what it looked like several hours ago around 2:15 this morning. so much water gushing out into this intersection was ankle deep at one point. lots of gravel, concrete chunks. they think they will get it fixed as far as the line is concerned this morning, early afternoon. now they are waiting on the utilities to come out like gas, cable so when the water company starts digging they don't break anything. >> i got up at 2:20 to go to work. went in to brush my face, there was no water. all i could hear were bubbles. i walked down the street and i see this mess all over the place. it was amazing. >> no idea. weather, ground movement, old age, i don't know. we'll find out when we get down
6:45 am
to it. >> the weather department shut down water to homes on filbert. they thought it was a six-inch line. they turned it back on and there was a 12-inch line that burst. they hope to have it fixed within the next several hours. late morning, early afternoon. again, filbert and mason. intersection is open. waiting for the cable car to be re-opened. check the slots and make sure there is no debris in there. live in san francisco, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> in the meantime a blast of winter weather affecting people statewide. in southern california, hundreds of drivers spent much of the night stranded between l.a. and bakersfield after a snowstorm on highway 58. >> right here in the bay area we are seeing snow as well up on the mountain tops like mount hamilton and mount diablo. >> in the south bay people were with pelted with hail as you could see from the willow glen

6:47 am
it's frigid out there. we'll see the cool ocean air all day long. count on a cool crisp day. one degree away from freezing at concord. we'll climb into the low 60s across the bay. we are talking postly upper 50s at noon. we'll round out the day. 59 degrees in gilroy. getting into the 7-day outlook, looking good. temperatures warm up. we dry out. mid 60s by friday getting into the important upcoming weekend. go ahead and make the outdoor plans. sunday will be better off than saturday. mostly cloudy conditions. sunday is the day to get out, enjoy 62 degrees. 59 at the coast. 6:49. let's check the drive. good morning, mike. >> not a great morning.
